AI Unleashed: Is it Skynet or Can It Benefit Us?

AI or artificial intelligence, has been sweeping headlines and making waves for the last little while. With any new technology, it will always be bundled with hype and fear. Let us dive into the vast ocean of artificial intelligence and explore the wonderful benefits and spine-chilling fears that come with this technological rollercoaster. And of course, with all AI conversations, how can we not mention Skynet and the Terminator?

5 Brilliant Benefits of AI

Efficiency Overload

Have you ever woken up super tired, badly needing a coffee and then stared blankly at your screen? With a million things to do, you can’t seem to get your productivity up because you just can’t wake up! Not to mention that co-workers who keep blabbering on when you're trying to focus.

Now imagine this: A world where AI takes care of your to-do list like a god. It truly is the unsung hero of productivity. Forget about waiting for your coffee to brew; AI will organize your schedule, crunch your numbers, coffee in hand and ready to remind you that it’s Tequila Tuesday.

Medical Marvels

AI just isn’t about crunching numbers, writing your cover letters and passing your bar exams. It’s making huge strides in the world of medicine as well. With the ability to gather all the data provided from devices like heart monitors, it’s able to look at more complex conditions and offer a more accurate diagnosis. There was an AI model that was developed to detect severe sepsis in premature babies and it was 75% accurate! This has been a massive leap in medicine. So don't be afraid that it'll recommend leeches for headaches unless you're into that kind of thing.

Virtual Companionship

Loneliness has been on the rise. Since 2015, 30% of millennials have been reported to be lonely in the United States. Similar numbers were coming out to Asia and Western Europe as well. In Germany alone, it was 70%!

Well, move aside loneliness! With AI technology, we are moving closer to having AI buddies. It does make you think of the movie Her, starring Joaquin Phoenix. These AI friends will understand our quirks better, share our interests and will never judge us for binge-watching cat videos at 2AM.

Not to say it'll replace your best friend, but it'll always be there for a chat, a game or even a shoulder to cry on.

Environmental Saviour

Some of us may fear AI but Mother Earth is having a party, with AI as the guest of honour! AI has the power to help us environmentally, from optimizing energy consumption to predicting environmental disasters. It can give real-time analysis', monitor methane emissions, track air quality, measure environmental footprints and reduce ICT emissions. Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new superhero at hand. Now whether we listen to it or not is up to us since climate change is still in debate!

Galactic Exploration

To loosely quote Star Trek - Space, the final frontier, these are the voyages of AI. Its mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life, to boldly go where no man has gone before. Elon Musk may be trying to reach Mars, but AI is acting like the Starship Enterprise.

It's been assisting astronauts with their work, helping spacecraft navigate, improving communications between Earth and space, removing space debris and searching for signs of life beyond Earth. Thanks to AI, we're able to analyze vast amounts of cosmic data, plan interstellar missions and just maybe one day travel to a galaxy far, far away.

5 Spine-Chilling Fears of AI

Time to switch gears from the light of the binary suns of Tatooine to the dark side. Brace yourself as we hit hyperspace and delve into the underbelly of AI.

Jobocalpyse Now

The big question with AI becoming front and centre is, what will happen to our jobs? A lot of us have a fear that many jobs will be eradicated and robots will be replacing us. With rising costs affecting everyone globally and the need to keep our jobs, this is the nightmare scenario that may keep some up at night.

But fear not! Perhaps, one day we might get there, but that will take time. Let's embrace the change first, learn some new skills and maybe even take some courses on how to act like a robot. After all, AI isn't going anywhere.

Rise of the Machines

You can already hear that music from Terminator now, can't you? What if one day, our AI buddies become self-aware and start to plot their domination? This fear is very real considering that's what Hollywood has been feeding us.

Scientists say it's still far out in the future. With language models like ChatGPT, it was designed to sound more human-like with all the data that it's given. But we still can't help but wonder, with how much data these models are being fed, can we reach that point? The thing is, we don't know yet, only time will tell. So just in case, let's start thanking Alexa after we send a command, ok?

Data Dystopia

Cash is king, but so is data. What if one day, that data will work against us? The misuse of data has been around for a long time now. Now imagine the amount of data that is out there, are we headed towards a data dystopia?

AI is as good as the data it's been given. But it's reading our libraries, which include every book ever written, including works by Machiavelli. It's also being trained by people, you can teach it anything including nefarious things. Perhaps one day, your smart house will blackmail you and manipulate you. OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman, has said that there definitely needs to be some regulations or we could very much reach that dystopia.

Ethical Entanglement

Ethics and data go hand in hand. As mentioned briefly under Data Dystopia, can we trust the humans behind AI? Sometimes, armed with a lot of data, one without a moral compass can't help but use it for nefarious reasons. The same thing can be said for AI, it's only as good as the humans behind it, so what if those humans aren't so good? This fear is a real concern and this is why there needs to be rules and regulations surrounding this development.

Deepfake Dystopia

We've all seen what can be done with deepfakes. To the untrained eye, it can be easily overlooked. Paired with AI being able to replicate voices, you can see why people are concerned. We all know those Nigerian Price emails but imagine a video call coming in from a loved one looking exactly like them and sounding like them. Seeing is no longer believing because now it can be used to spread misinformation and propaganda. You may not have said or done something, but with this technology, it can look like you have. Sounds a bit violating, if you ask me.

Conclusion

The benefits and fears of AI are as intertwined as the force to a Jedi or the Sith. And as Uncle Ben has said many times, with great power comes great responsibility, let's remember this as we navigate this new world of AI. Who knows, maybe a good sense of humour might be the secret weapon we need to survive the AI apocalypse. For now, let us embrace the new change, use it to our advantage, learn new skills and it wouldn't hurt to keep an eye out for a rogue Roomba here and there.
